Yerevan has been proclaimed European Students’ Capital and hosted European Students’ Union

Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan welcomed the delegates of the European Students’ Union and the members of the Armenian National Students’ Association who arrived in Yerevan on the occasion of Yerevan being proclaimed the European Students’ Capital events.
Greeting those present and expressing gratitude to the National Students’ Association of Armenia for the contribution to the proclamation of Yerevan European Students’ Capital, Yerevan Mayor noted that being chosen as European Students’ Capital is an honorary and responsible obligation.
“We consider it an honor to be European Student’s Capital, taking into consideration the fact that the issues related to students and youth have always been at the focus of Yerevan Municipality”, stressed the Mayor Taron Margaryan.
Emphasizing the particular importance of youth participation in the programs implemented in various spheres of urban development Taron Margaryan stressed that Yerevan Municipality is always ready to hear out and discuss any constructive proposals aimed at the development of the capital.
“The Youth Public Council adjunct to Yerevan Mayor, the active member of which is the Armenian National Students’ Association, takes an important part in the programs being implemented in the capital, more over some of the programs are made up taking into account youth proposals. Today many young people work in Yerevan Municipality and bring their important contribution to city development. There is some proverb: “In youth we learn, in age we understand”, i.e. it’s the best time for you to get education, skills and experience. You are the moving force of mankind and civilization, the hope and guarantee of the future. I wish you strong health, endless enthusiasm and success in all you initiatives. I am confident that this meeting in Yerevan will give you lots of positive impulses and you will love our 2797-year-old city which has become your capital this year”, stressed Taron Margaryan.
The President of the European Students’ Union Elisabeth Gehrke thanked for warm welcome and noted that the capital of Armenia is really full of youth spirit and expressed hope that Yerevan will honorably bear the name of the European Students’ Capital.
“Though I have been here for only a few days I have already been admired with warmth and hospitality of the capital and its residents. I am sure that the events to be organized within the frames of Yerevan proclamation the European Students’ Capital would create the possibility to study reciprocal experience and to outline the ways of its effective exchange”, said Elisabeth Gehrke.
Within the frames of the event Mayor Taron Margaryan had friendly conversations with the guests. Having thanked for permanent support the Chairman of the National Students’ Association of Armenia Armen Aleksanyan assured on behalf of the students that they are ready to activate the cooperation with the Municipality of Yerevan stressing that Mayor Taron Margaryan really appreciates the potential of the youth.
It should be noted that ESU established in 1982 is the umbrella organization of 47 National Unions of Students (NUS) from 39 countries. The aim of ESU is to represent and promote the educational, social, economic and cultural interests of students at the European level towards all relevant bodies and in particular the European Union, Bologna Follow Up Group, Council of Europe and UNESCO. Through its members, ESU represents over 15 million students in Europe.
During the 65th Board Meeting of the European Students’ Association held in Zagreb, Croatia in 2014 the Armenian National Students’ Association applied for being proclaimed the European Students’ Capital. Armenian National Students’ Association and Israel National Students’ Union bid for holding the spring session of ESU in 2015, but at the end Yerevan won.
